When I was planning this piece out, I wanted to try to make it educational as well as fun to play and listen to. I decided to utilize the idea and rhythmic pattern of “double beat” throughout. I have always felt that double beat grooves pretty well, and it is also a technique that is utilized in a variety of ways in percussion literature. From the first melody, which was derived from double beat, the piece took off. Towards the end, “Security Breach” utilizes marching percussion. This gives the piece a real car chase quality to it, that helped to eventually determine the title. This piece could be a great intro to marching percussion, or just a way to dust off the marching chops of your percussionists between marching seasons.

Security Breach was commissioned by the Pea Ridge Middle School Band, Matt McCool & Kevin Hume, directors, Pea Ridge, Arkansas.

I also took the opportunity to write a technical supplement with a pretty cool backing track to this piece to further develop the technical skills needed for this piece.  Check out db16g here!
